Folegandros is what Santorini might have been without the cruise ships. A small, quiet island between Milos and Sikinos, it has one of the most dramatically sited Choras in all of Greece — perched on a 200-metre cliff edge, with the church of Panagia rising above on a zigzag path lit by lanterns at night.
The island has no airport and limited ferry connections, which keeps it wonderfully uncrowded. By yacht, you arrive on your own schedule and anchor in bays that most visitors never see. Katergo beach, on the southeast coast, is a stunning cove of turquoise water and golden pebbles reachable only by sea. Agali, on the west, has a small beach with a couple of tavernas.
Folegandros rewards those who seek the essence of the Cyclades without the trappings. The Chora's main square, shaded by a massive bougainvillea, may be the most photogenic piazza in Greece.
