Kalymnos

Where the Sponge Divers' Island Meets the Open Sea

Charter in Kalymnos: What to Expect

A yacht charter in Kalymnos is not a passive experience. The island's topography — steep cliffs dropping directly into deep, clear water, narrow channels separating it from neighbouring islets, and a handful of south-facing bays that catch the Aegean light in the late afternoon — demands an itinerary built around exploration rather than convenience. Pothia, the island's capital and main port, makes an excellent base: its neoclassical harbour-front architecture and animated waterfront give it a lived-in authenticity rarely found in the more tourist-driven Dodecanese. Charter guests who take time to walk beyond the quay will find a town that still measures its civic pride in sponges, not souvenirs.

The waters around Kalymnos are notably clear and deep, with excellent holding in most of the principal anchorages. Experienced skippers will find the local wind patterns manageable for much of the season, though the afternoon meltemi can strengthen considerably in July and August — something worth factoring into your daily passage planning.

Anchorages & Highlights

Vathy — a long, fjord-like inlet on the eastern coast — is among the most dramatic anchorages in the entire Dodecanese. The approach by yacht through its narrow entrance, flanked by citrus orchards and sheer rock walls, is genuinely arresting. Lay a stern line to the quay at the head of the inlet and the village is immediately at hand.

Emborios, on the island's northwestern tip, offers a quieter, more isolated anchorage with a pebbled shore and only a scattering of tavernas — ideal for overnight stays when the meltemi subsides. Myrties and Masouri, on the western coast, provide convenient stops opposite the small island of Telendos, which is itself a worthwhile detour: the islet has a medieval castle ruin, a handful of excellent fish restaurants, and an anchorage off its southeastern shore that is calm and well-sheltered in most conditions. The strait between Kalymnos and Telendos is one of the more pleasurable short passages a charter skipper can make in the Aegean.

Best Time to Charter in Kalymnos

May, June, and September are the preferred months for a Kalymnos yacht charter, offering settled weather, sea temperatures that allow comfortable swimming, and anchorages that remain free from the high-season congestion that affects busier Dodecanese destinations. July and August bring stronger meltemi winds — particularly from the northwest — which, while manageable for experienced crews, can limit flexibility in routing. Early October extends the viable charter season further than much of the northern Aegean, with calm seas and warm evenings that make sundowner anchorages especially rewarding.

Getting There

Kalymnos is served by Kalymnos Island National Airport, with seasonal connections to Athens and select European cities. Kos International Airport, approximately 12 nautical miles to the south, offers broader flight connectivity and functions as a practical embarkation point for charter guests collecting a vessel in the area. Aris Drivas Yachting can coordinate base arrangements at Kos Marina or Pothia harbour directly, depending on your chosen vessel and itinerary — an advantage that comes from over five decades of operational presence across the Greek islands. Best Season

June and September represent the optimum window for a Kalymnos yacht charter: air and sea temperatures are at their most comfortable, the meltemi blows with moderate and predictable force, and the island's key anchorages — including Vathy and Emborios — remain uncrowded. July and August intensify wind conditions from the northwest, which can restrict day-sailing flexibility but present no serious obstacle for experienced crews on well-found yachts. October is increasingly favoured by seasoned charter guests seeking warm, glassy evenings and the quietest anchorages of the season.
