About the yard

Sea Ray was founded in 1959 by Cornelius Ray as Ray Industries, starting out of a small shop with three employees and a fibreglass boat factory in Oxford, Michigan, and was an early adopter of fibreglass construction in production boatbuilding. Ray grew the business into the largest boat company of its era, relocating headquarters to Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1985, before Brunswick Corporation bought the company in 1986 for $350 million, in the same deal that brought Bayliner into the Brunswick fold. Sea Ray now operates as part of Brunswick Boat Group, building fibreglass sport boats and cruisers in the SLX series, from around 8 to 12 metres, alongside its long-running Sundancer line, after the group discontinued its larger yacht and sport-yacht models in 2018 to focus on boats up to around 12 metres. Its landmark model remains the L650 Fly, built between 2015 and 2018 as part of the L Class launched in 2014, and reported at the time as the largest yacht Sea Ray had put into production.
