A 7-day private yacht charter through the Maldives is an immersion in tropical marine splendour. This 60-nautical-mile circuit explores the Ari Atoll — the epicentre of Maldivian diving and snorkelling — with days spent anchored over coral gardens and sandbanks, encountering manta rays, reef sharks, and a kaleidoscope of tropical fish. The combination of exclusive anchorages, pristine reefs, and warm crystalline waters makes this one of Asia's premier charter destinations.

Your Voyage
1

Male to Vakarufahli Beru Tila

20 nm

Depart Male, the capital and main island, and head northwest for 20 nautical miles to Vakarufahli Beru Tila, your first anchorage in the outer Ari Atoll. The passage takes 3–4 hours in typical conditions. Vakarufahli Beru Tila is a sandbank studded with coral heads and surrounded by pristine reef. The waters are 28–30°C year-round and visibility is 20–30 metres. Upon arrival, anchor in the designated spot (coordinates provided by your charter company) and slip into the water immediately for a snorkel. Tropical fish swarm the coral — parrotfish, triggerfish, angelfish, fusiliers in dense schools. The afternoon is ideal for a relaxed first snorkel, getting your bearings, and adjusting to the rhythm of tropical sailing.

2

Vakarufahli Beru Tila to Vakarufahli Beru Tila (explore)

Dedicate a full day to exploring the reefs around Vakarufahli Beru Tila. Multiple snorkelling spots are within a short dinghy ride of your yacht. The main reef wall drops to 20+ metres and is lined with hard corals, sea fans, and a resident population of reef sharks (harmless to snorkellers). Morning snorkelling is best — calmest conditions, clearest light, most active fish. Midday, explore a different section of the reef by dinghy, then rest in the afternoon heat. A sunset dip from the yacht deck is a Maldivian ritual — the warm water at dusk is sublime. Sea turtles are seen regularly; if encountered, observe from a respectful distance. The isolation here is profound — few other yachts, no resorts, no people. The sounds are the reef, the waves, and the wind.

3

Vakarufahli Beru Tila to Maamigili Beru

15 nm

Motor 15 nautical miles southwest to Maamigili Beru, another exceptional sandbank anchorage on the outer Ari Atoll. This location is equally pristine and offers a different reef profile. The northern face of the atoll has a dramatic reef wall with deeper water and larger pelagic fish. Anchor and snorkel immediately — the water here often has exceptional clarity. Maamigili Beru is known as a reliable spot for manta ray encounters during peak season (March–April, September–October). Mantas are gentle filter-feeders that aggregate over the reef during certain moon phases. Encountering one in the water — a creature 3–4 metres across, gliding like an underwater bird — is an unforgettable experience. Even in off-season, the reef life is superb.

4

Maamigili Beru to Rasdhoo Atoll

20 nm

A 20-nm passage northeast to Rasdhoo Atoll, moving to the northern section of the broader atoll system. Rasdhoo is smaller and less visited than the Ari Atoll's main islands, making it feel even more exclusive. Anchor in a protected bay and spend the afternoon snorkelling over coral gardens populated with nudibranchs, cuttlefish, and abundant reef fish. The atoll's interior lagoon has calm, shallow waters ideal for leisurely snorkelling. Ashore (if permitted by Maldivian regulations), the island villages are off-limits to tourists, but you can observe traditional Maldivian life from a distance — the characteristic wooden houses on stilts, fishing boats, and coconut palms creating an idyllic tropical setting.

5

Rasdhoo Atoll to Bandos

15 nm

Motor south for 15 nautical miles to Bandos, another premium snorkelling and diving location. Bandos sits in the heart of the Ari Atoll's prime diving territory. The reef system is expansive and teeming with life. A highlight here is a sandbank picnic — a dinghy excursion to a shallow, uninhabited sandbar where you can set up for a beachside lunch on a strip of white sand in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The experience of swimming to shore through warm, clear water is quintessentially Maldivian. Pack a cooler, snacks, water, and sunscreen; spend a few hours on the sandbank before returning to the yacht for the afternoon. Evening snorkelling around the yacht often reveals nocturnal fish and creatures emerging as the sun sets.

6

Bandos to Meerufenfushi

5 nm

A short 5-nm passage brings you to Meerufenfushi, one of the Ari Atoll's most famous dive sites. The reef here has exceptional coral health and diversity. If you dive (certification required), this location is world-class. For snorkellers, the shallow reef is equally rewarding. The site is known for encounters with larger pelagics — reef sharks, trevally, tuna — that hunt the outer reef wall. The underwater scenery is dramatic: coral pinnacles rise from deep water, creating a three-dimensional landscape. Spend the afternoon and evening snorkelling, then enjoy a sunset from the yacht deck with a tropical drink, watching the sky turn pink and orange over the Indian Ocean.

7

Meerufenfushi to Male

10 nm

A final 10-nm passage south returns you to Male and the Yacht Club. Depending on your departure flight, morning departure may allow time for a last-minute snorkel before heading ashore. The 2–3 hour return passage gives time to relax on deck, process the week's experiences, and prepare for disembarkation. Male is a bustling, colourful capital; a final evening ashore dining on local fish curries and fresh seafood is recommended. The contrast between the peaceful isolation of the outer atoll anchorages and the busy island capital is stark.

Practical Information

Season

November through April is the dry season and best for this itinerary. Winds are moderate (15–20 knots), seas are calm, and visibility is excellent. March–April and September–October offer the highest probability of manta ray encounters (though not guaranteed). The monsoon season (May–October) sees stronger winds, choppier seas, and occasional heavy rain; some charter companies cease operations during this period.

Embarkation

Male Yacht Club or adjacent marina facilities serve as the charter base. Male International Airport is the only entry point for international visitors. The capital is crowded, traffic-choked, and chaotic — most charterers spend minimal time ashore before heading to the outer atolls.

Visas & Customs

Most nationalities receive a 30-day tourist visa on arrival (passport valid 6 months minimum). Maldives is a Muslim nation with strict drug laws and rules regarding alcohol (only on yachts and resorts, not in public). Yacht permits are required; your charter company will handle logistics.

Provisioning

The Maldives has limited provisioning options. Male has supermarkets, but supplies diminish rapidly on outer islands. Fresh fish is available daily — local boats and island communities often sell catch. Tropical fruits are seasonal and abundant. Pre-provision in Male with staples before heading to the outer atolls; rely on local fish and fruits for the majority of meals.

Health & Environment

The Maldives has excellent dive and snorkel safety infrastructure. Hospitals in Male are adequate; evacuation helicopters are available. Reef health varies; recent coral bleaching has been reported. Ask your crew about current reef conditions. Always follow guidelines regarding marine life — do not touch coral, do not feed fish, maintain distance from reef sharks (they are harmless but can be stressed by close approach).

Cost

The Maldives is moderately expensive. Charter yacht rates are competitive, but fuel and provisioning are costly. Diving or professional snorkelling guide services (available through resort partners) add cost but are worth the investment for encounters with larger marine life.

This itinerary is a suggestion.

Your captain will tailor stops based on weather, manta ray sightings, and your diving/snorkelling preferences. Flexibility to spend extra days in favourite anchorages, seek out manta ray hotspots, or explore alternative atolls (North Male Atoll, Baa Atoll) is encouraged. The short inter-island distances mean the pace is leisurely and the schedule can adapt to conditions and desires in real time.
