The coastline south of Athens is where Aris Drivas Yachting began in 1972 — and where some of the finest day charter experiences in the Mediterranean quietly unfold. The Athenian Riviera stretches from Piraeus to Cape Sounion, a 40-nautical-mile ribbon of coast that combines ancient history, contemporary luxury, and remarkably clear water within sight of one of Europe's oldest capitals.

Vouliagmeni and Beyond

Vouliagmeni is the epicentre of Athenian coastal life. The Four Seasons Astir Palace sits on its own peninsula, and the marina at Astir is one of the most well-appointed in Greece. Several of ADY's managed fleet — including FLORI — berth here year-round. For a charter starting from Athens, Vouliagmeni offers the most elegant embarkation point: a short transfer from the airport, immediate access to open water, and a coastline that improves with every nautical mile south.

Below Vouliagmeni, the coast becomes quieter. Lagonisi and Saronida have sheltered bays suitable for swimming stops, and the small harbour at Anavyssos is a favourite lunch anchorage for local captains who know the taverna on the quay. The water here is consistently clean — a function of the rocky seabed, deep offshore drop-offs, and prevailing northerly currents.

Cape Sounion

The ancient Temple of Poseidon sits on the headland at Sounion, visible from several miles offshore. Arriving by yacht in the late afternoon, with the marble columns catching the Attic light, is one of the signature moments of Greek cruising. The anchorage below the temple is exposed to southerly swell but tenable in settled conditions — and the sunset from the water is better than any photograph.

The Saronic Gulf Connection

From Sounion, the Saronic Gulf opens up. Aegina is a 90-minute crossing; Hydra is half a day. Many week-long charters use the Athens Riviera as a warm-up day before heading south into the Saronic or across to the Peloponnese. It is a natural transition — from the urban Mediterranean to the island Mediterranean — and it sets the tone for everything that follows.

Why It Matters

The Riviera is more than a departure point. For guests arriving from long-haul flights, a day along this coast — swimming, adjusting to the light, having a first meal aboard — is the most civilised way to begin a charter. The crew is relaxed, the distances are short, and the scenery is better than most people expect. Athens is not the place you leave behind. It is the place where the journey begins.
