The Aegean in October — Why Shoulder Season Is the Best-Kept Secret

3 min readADY Editorial

When the summer crowds retreat and the light turns golden, the Aegean reveals its truest self. October offers warm seas, empty anchorages, and a pace of life that no peak-season itinerary can match.

When the summer crowds retreat and the light turns golden, the Aegean reveals its truest self. October is the Mediterranean's shoulder season in name only — the water is warmer than in June, the days are long enough for a full programme, and the anchorages that were three-deep with yachts in August are yours alone.

The Case for Shoulder Season

Water Temperature

The sea retains summer heat well into autumn. October water temperatures across the Aegean range from 22 to 24°C — warmer than May or June, and comfortable for extended swimming. The thermal mass of the Mediterranean means the sea is at its warmest in late September and early October, regardless of air temperature.

Wind

The Meltemi, the strong northerly wind that defines July and August in the Cyclades, weakens significantly by mid-September and is usually absent by October. What remains are moderate, variable breezes — ideal for comfortable cruising without the need to recalculate the itinerary every morning.

Light

October light in the Aegean is extraordinary. The sun sits lower, the shadows are longer, and the colours deepen — navy water, ochre hillsides, the pink and violet of sunset. For guests who photograph, paint, or simply notice these things, October is unmatched.

What Changes

Island Life

Some beach bars and seasonal restaurants close in early October, particularly on smaller islands. The main towns remain fully operational, and many locals consider October their favourite month — the tourists are gone, the weather is warm, and the pace returns to something like normal. The quality of the experience actually improves.

Provisioning

Fresh produce is at its autumn peak: figs, pomegranates, grapes, new-season olive oil. The fishing is excellent. Yacht crews who know the local suppliers will provision with ingredients that are seasonal and specific — not the generic Mediterranean menu of high summer.

Availability

Charter yacht availability in October is excellent. Many boats that are fully booked from June to September have open weeks, and rates reflect this. A yacht that commands €100,000 per week in August may be available for €75,000 in October, with the same crew and the same itinerary options.

Recommended Routes

The Full Cyclades

October is the only month when you can comfortably sail the full Cyclades circuit — from Kea in the northwest to Amorgos in the east, down to Santorini, and back via Milos and Sifnos — without worrying about Meltemi disruption. The distances between islands are short, the conditions are gentle, and every anchorage is available.

Dodecanese and Eastern Aegean

Rhodes, Symi, Kos, Patmos — the southeastern islands are at their best in October. Warmer than the Cyclades, culturally rich, and virtually empty of tourists. Symi's harbour, one of the most photographed in Greece, is best appreciated without the day-trip boats that crowd it in summer.

The Verdict

October is not a compromise. It is arguably the finest month to charter in the Aegean — a fact well known to experienced guests and carefully guarded by those who prefer their anchorages uncrowded.
