Where to see art by yacht: Greece, the South of France and Miami

6 min readBy Vanessa Kyriazi

A new exhibition every summer in an old slaughterhouse on Hydra, a villa on Porquerolles, Art Basel in December. Where to see art by yacht in Greece, the South of France and Miami, and what to do if you buy a piece along the way.

Some of the best art in the Mediterranean is a short walk from a quay. An old slaughterhouse on Hydra that hosts a new exhibition every summer. A villa on Porquerolles, an island you can only reach by boat. A castle on the Antibes ramparts where Picasso worked in the autumn of 1946.

A yacht is a good way to see art. You arrive at your own hour, before the ferry crowds or after them, and you stay at anchor close to the work. A week can be built around one exhibition, or around a whole season of them.

Below are 4 stops in Greece and 2 routes beyond it. Every stop has a permanent collection or a show that comes back each year. The artists change. The places stay. Opening months are correct as of October 2026, so check the new season's dates before you book.

Where can you see art by yacht in Greece?

Athens (all year)

For charters that start or end in Athens, the city deserves time of its own. The Goulandris Museum in Pangrati hangs Van Gogh, Cézanne and Picasso alongside the Greek painters Tsarouchis and Ghika. EMST, the National Museum of Contemporary Art, fills the former Fix brewery with Greek and international contemporary work. Both are open all year round. We can also arrange private visits to contemporary art galleries and artists' studios before you board.

Hydra (June to October)

The reason to go is DESTE. Since 2009, Dakis Joannou's foundation has given the old slaughterhouse on Hydra to one artist, or occasionally a group show, each summer. Matthew Barney and Elizabeth Peyton opened it. Maurizio Cattelan, Kara Walker, Kiki Smith and George Condo followed, and Nari Ward showed there in 2026. The space is open from June to October.

The exhibition also opens in the evening, so the day can be spent at anchor. Jeff Koons's golden Apollo, installed in 2022, is visible as you come into the harbour.

Hydra is in the Saronic Gulf, south-west of Athens. Nearby Dokos, which has no permanent residents, is a good place to swim, and Poros or Aegina make a lunch stop on the way back.

Andros (summer)

The Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation's Museum of Contemporary Art is on Andros, in Chora, the island's main town. It opened in 1979, and recent summers have brought a major exhibition each year: Martine Franck in 2024, Takis in 2025 and the French sculptor Germaine Richier in 2026.

From Lavrio, the port south-east of Athens, Kea makes a natural overnight stop on the way to Andros. The museum fills a morning. The rest of the island has walking paths and quiet beaches.

Chios (July to early September)

DEO, the first contemporary art organisation on Chios, has staged a summer exhibition every year since 2021, each time in a different part of the island. In 2024 the work filled the alleys of Vessa, a medieval village in the southwest. In 2025 it moved to the Karaviko estate in Kampos. In 2026, A Letter to an Ailing Father brought 14 artists, Cindy Sherman and Danh Võ among them, to the old school in Volissos from 11 July to 30 August. Next summer's venue is anyone's guess, which is half the fun.

Chios lies in the eastern Aegean, a longer passage from Athens, so it suits a charter with a few days to spare.

Where can you see art by yacht outside Greece?

Provence and the Côte d'Azur (late April to October)

Marseille is the natural starting point. Château La Coste lies inland, north of Aix-en-Provence: a wine estate with a 180-hectare art and architecture walk, works by artists including Louise Bourgeois and Richard Serra, and an art centre designed by Tadao Ando. It is open all year round.

East along the coast, Porquerolles holds the Fondation Carmignac, a villa in a 15-hectare park 10 minutes on foot from the port. It has shown temporary exhibitions from the Carmignac collection since 2018. The 2026 show was Sea, Pop & Sun, 1960s and 70s Pop Art, from 25 April to 1 November.

In Antibes, the Musée Picasso fills the Château Grimaldi on the ramparts, overlooking the sea. Picasso worked there from September to November 1946 and left 23 paintings and 44 drawings in the town's care. Inland from Antibes, the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence has been open since 1964, with work by Miró, Chagall, Giacometti, Braque and Calder. It is open all year round.

La Coste makes a day trip by car from Marseille. Porquerolles is a good place to anchor and swim before or after the foundation. From there the coast runs east past Saint-Tropez to Antibes, and the route can end in Nice or Monaco.

Winter: Miami Art Week, then the Bahamas (December)

Art Basel Miami Beach comes back every December. In 2026 its public days are 4 to 6 December, at the Miami Beach Convention Center, during Miami Art Week. A yacht in Island Gardens, the Miami Beach Marina or the Venetian Marina makes a quiet base for the week: dinners on board, then out to the fair and the parties.

Outside fair hours, two museums are worth the time, and both are open all year. The Pérez Art Museum Miami sits on Biscayne Bay in a building by Herzog & de Meuron, with a collection that leans towards Latin America, the Caribbean and the African diaspora. The Rubell Museum in Allapattah shows the Rubell family's collection, with Basquiat, Warhol and Cindy Sherman among its artists.

Board before the fair opens, so the crew is settled when the week begins. When it closes, cross to the Bahamas. In Nassau, the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas shows historic and contemporary Bahamian art in Villa Doyle, a historic house downtown. The Out islands are for anchorages and swimming.

What if you buy art during a charter?

Sooner or later someone falls for a painting in a studio or a gallery near the harbour, and the question is how it gets home. Our advice:

  • Let the gallery ship it. Ask for door-to-door shipping with a specialist art shipper, and keep the invoice.
  • If it comes on board, keep it inside. A wrapped work rides in a cabin, out of the sun and away from the deck, never in the lazarette with the salt and the heat. The London dealer Adrian Sassoon told BOAT International: "If you're inside and you don't feel too cold or too hot, then the art will be fine too."
  • Check your own insurance. The yacht's policy is there for the yacht. For a new piece, the insurer Chubb advises a valuables policy with worldwide, all-risk cover that includes items bought while travelling.
  • Ask about paperwork before you pay. Contemporary work bought from a gallery with a proper invoice is usually simple. Older work can need an export licence.

Where to next?

Pick a show, a museum or a time of year. Send us your dates. We will find the right yacht and plan an itinerary that gives the art and the sea equal time, in Greece or further afield. If you come home with a painting, we will help you get it there too.
