Azimut was founded in 1969 by Paolo Vitelli, beginning in boat chartering before moving into building. Its main yard sits at Avigliana near Turin, with further Italian sites and a yard in Brazil; since 1985 it has shared the Azimut|Benetti group with Benetti.
The Azimut brand builds composite production and semi-custom motor yachts from roughly 9 to 38 metres, across lines including the Magellano, Flybridge, S, and Grande series.
The yard has invested heavily in carbon fibre and hull efficiency. Its Magellano series uses a dual-mode hull that runs economically at displacement speed and transitions to plane around 16 knots, while the 38-metre Grande Trideck, delivered in 2024, pairs carbon construction with a displacement-to-planing hull. Azimut reports fuel and emissions reductions of 20 to 30 percent from these measures.
