Where to spend Christmas and New Year on a Caribbean yacht

5 min readBy Vanessa Kyriazi

Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks of the Caribbean charter season.

Where to anchor for the 25th and the 31st, island by island

Barefoot, festive, warm.

Every winter, much of the charter fleet moves from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, and Christmas and New Year are its busiest weeks.

Each island gives you a different holiday, from the biggest New Year's Eve on the water to a Christmas lunch in an anchorage with no hotel in sight. Here is where to go, depending on how you want to spend the 25th and the 31st.

Which Caribbean island is best for New Year's Eve on a yacht?

St Barths. On New Year's Eve 2025, a record 226 superyachts over 78 feet gathered off the island, according to YachtBuyer's MarketWatch data. That was 56 more than the 170 counted in 2024, and 13 of them were over 100 metres. Their average length was 56.82 metres, up from 54.86 metres the year before.

Gustavia harbour is where the boats gather.

In 2026, the peak week runs from Saturday 26 December (Boxing Day) to Saturday 2 January 2027, and New Year's Eve falls on a Thursday. Go if you want to be where every yacht in the Caribbean seems to be that night. If you want a quiet anchorage on the 31st, pick another island.

Where should you spend Christmas on a yacht with children?

The British Virgin Islands. The water is calm, the anchorages are safe, and the hops between islands are short.

The islands now have more room for larger yachts. Biras Marina opened in North Sound, Virgin Gorda, in February 2026, with berths for yachts over 150 feet.

For New Year's Eve, sail to Jost Van Dyke. Much of the Caribbean calls the night Old Year's Night, and Foxy's Tamarind Bar, on the beach there since 1968, is famous for its party.

Where can you have a quiet Christmas at anchor?

The Grenadines, the chain of islands between St Vincent and Grenada. For a secluded Christmas, look at the Tobago Cays, Mustique, and Bequia.

The Tobago Cays are five uninhabited islands (Petit Rameau, Petit Bateau, Baradal, Petit Tabac, and Jamesby) inside a national marine park. There are no hotels or restaurants, so most visitors arrive by yacht or on a day trip. This is the place for a long Christmas lunch on deck and a swim off the stern.

Where can you pair a yacht Christmas with history and a party ashore?

Antigua. English Harbour is home to Nelson's Dockyard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and on Christmas Day the dockyard throws a champagne party that has run for more than three decades.

The Antigua Observer reported that it usually draws hundreds of people, plenty of them dressed as Santa. In 2022, the most recent year the paper reported the details, it ran from noon to about 6pm, entry was free, and donations went to local causes. Times can change from year to year, so ask your captain before you plan lunch around it.

One way to split the holidays: Christmas in English Harbour, New Year's Eve in Gustavia. Both islands sit in the Leewards. Ask your broker how many hours of sailing lie between them on your yacht.

What happens in the Bahamas over the holidays?

Junkanoo. In the Bahamas, the street parade runs on Boxing Day, 26 December, and again on New Year's Day. The New Year's parade starts "in the wee hours after midnight" on Bay Street in downtown Nassau, according to the Bahamas tourism board.

Watch the year turn from the deck, then take the tender ashore for the parade.

What is the weather like in the Caribbean at Christmas?

Calmer than in the autumn. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, according to the US National Hurricane Center, so the holiday weeks fall after it has closed. If a storm passed through earlier in the season, ask your broker which harbours and marinas are fully open again.

Expect a breeze. The northeast trade winds often blow harder through December and January, a pattern sailors call the Christmas winds. Blue Water Sailing describes the winter winds as generally reliable, but not always present. That suits a sailing yacht. On a motor yacht, ask your captain to plan Christmas lunch in an anchorage in the lee of an island.

The yachts are ready well before the holidays. The Antigua Charter Yacht Show, where charter yachts are shown to brokers at Nelson's Dockyard, runs from 4 to 9 December 2026, and it has been held since 1961.

When should you book a Christmas yacht charter in the Caribbean?

As early as you can. The holiday weeks are the first to fill, and the yachts most in demand are taken first.

We can help you plan it. and how you want to spend the 25th and the 31st, and we will come back with yachts free over the holidays and the sailing time between the islands you choose.

**Which yachts are still free for the holidays?**

Frequently asked questions

How long is a Christmas or New Year yacht charter in the Caribbean?+

Usually at least seven nights. Most yachts take Christmas and New Year as two separate charters, one ending around Boxing Day and the next starting soon after. You can also book both in one longer charter, ten nights or more across 25 and 31 December, when the yacht has both weeks free.

Does a yacht charter cost more over Christmas and New Year?+

Usually. Christmas and New Year are charged at the yacht's holiday rates, which are usually higher than a normal winter week. Each yacht sets its own, so ask for the holiday rate rather than the standard winter rate. Fuel, food, drinks, and berths are paid on top of the charter fee.

How many guests can you take on a Christmas yacht charter?+

Twelve on most charter yachts. The limit comes from maritime codes such as the Red Ensign Group Yacht Code, which covers commercial yachts of 24 metres and over carrying no more than 12 passengers. A yacht that takes 13 to 36 guests must meet the stricter Part B of the code, and fewer yachts do, so tell us your numbers when you first ask.

How much should you tip the crew on a Christmas charter?+

Between 10 and 20% of the charter fee is usual. Give it to the captain at the end of the charter, who shares it among the crew.
