Benetti has built boats in Italy since 1873, when Lorenzo Benetti took over a shipyard in Viareggio; his sons ran it as Fratelli Benetti from 1914. Since 1985 it has formed part of the Azimut|Benetti group, building in Viareggio, Livorno, and Fano.
The yard moved from wood to steel in the 1960s and now works mainly in the large-yacht range — composite models alongside steel-and-aluminium displacement superyachts from roughly 30 to over 100 metres, custom and semi-custom. It is one of the longer-running names in Italian yacht building.
