Explore Ionian Islands

The Ionian Islands lie off Greece’s western coast, sheltered from the Aegean’s Meltemi by the mainland’s mountain spine. The result is a cruising ground of unusual calm — turquoise water held still between green hillsides, predictable afternoon thermals rather than open-sea winds, and anchorages so protected that a swimming platform doubles as a dining table. For families, for first-time charterers, and for anyone who prefers a gin and tonic in flat water at sunset, the Ionian delivers with quiet consistency.

In the Ionian, the sea is warm, the wind is kind, and the olive trees grow down to the waterline.

Geography

The chain runs north to south along the Epirus and western Peloponnese coast: Corfu at the top, near the Albanian border, then Paxos and its satellite Antipaxos, Lefkada (connected to the mainland by a swing bridge), Ithaca, Kefalonia (the largest), and Zakynthos to the south. The distances are short — Corfu to Paxos is 30 nautical miles; Lefkada to Ithaca, 20. The mainland coast opposite, with its fjord-like inlets and deserted bays, adds a second layer of cruising options.

Island by Island

Corfu carries Venetian, French, and British layers in its architecture. The old town is a UNESCO site with arcaded streets, a cricket ground, and restaurants that lean Italian in their flavours — pastitsada, sofrito, kumquat liqueur. The northeast coast has quiet coves backed by cypress and olive groves; the west is more exposed but striking.

Paxos is the jewel of the group — small (10 km long), car-light, and densely olive-covered. Gaios, the main port, sits at the end of a narrow channel with a fortified islet at its mouth. Lakka, at the northern tip, is a horseshoe bay popular with yachts. Antipaxos, a mile south, has two beaches — Voutoumi and Vrika — with water that shifts between emerald and milky blue depending on the sand below.

Lefkada offers the best combination of marina facilities and wild coastline. The west side drops in sheer white cliffs (Porto Katsiki is among Greece’s most photographed beaches), while the sheltered east coast is lined with small bays. Meganisi, a satellite island just off Lefkada’s southeast shore, has three villages, no traffic, and anchorages that fill gently on summer evenings.

Ithaca, Odysseus’s island, is steep, quiet, and undervisited. Vathy, the main harbour, sits at the head of a deep inlet — one of the most sheltered natural harbours in the Mediterranean. Kefalonia is larger and more varied: the Melissani cave, Myrtos beach (a sweep of white pebbles beneath a 200-metre cliff), vineyards producing the crisp Robola white. Zakynthos to the south is famous for Navagio — the shipwreck beach — but also offers quieter coves along its eastern shore and loggerhead turtle nesting sites in Laganas Bay.

A Typical Charter Week

Most itineraries start from Lefkada or Corfu. A southern loop from Lefkada might run: Meganisi, Ithaca (Vathy), Kefalonia (Fiskardo), back to Lefkada via Kastos and Kalamos — small islands on the mainland side with negligible tourism and excellent holding. A northern loop from Corfu: Paxos, Antipaxos, the mainland coast at Sivota (a system of islets and coves), and back. Daily passages rarely exceed three hours.

Season and Conditions

  • May–June: Green hillsides, warm days (24–28°C), light winds. Water still fresh from winter rain — visibility excellent.
  • July–August: Settled weather, afternoon thermals of 8–15 knots from the northwest. Warm evenings, busy harbours at Fiskardo and Gaios.
  • September–October: Quieter, warmer water, occasional southerly weather systems. Olives ripening, light turning golden.

The Ionian is often described as Greece’s gentle side. That is accurate, but it undersells the variety — Venetian towns, vertical cliffs, Homeric mythology, and mainland gorges are all within a day’s sail. It is as rich as any Aegean itinerary, simply delivered at a lower pulse rate.

Why Charter Here

The Ionian Islands offer almost the inverse of the Cyclades. The landscape is greener, the villages carry more Venetian influence, and the sea is generally calmer and easier to read. For many guests this is not a second-best option but the better one. The Ionian is where chartering becomes expansive, family-friendly, and less dependent on tactical weather decisions.

Because passages are manageable and harbours are frequent, the region supports several styles of charter. A relaxed family week can stay within short hops. More ambitious guests can range from Corfu down through Paxos, Lefkada, Kefalonia, and Zakynthos. In both cases the sea remains an ally rather than a constant strategic problem.

The Ionian is also one of the strongest answers for guests who want Greece with a slightly softer profile: still beautiful, still distinct, but more forgiving and often greener in every sense.
