Charter in Paxos: What to Expect
Paxos is not an island that performs for mass tourism — it earns its reputation quietly, through the quality of its light, the depth of its water colour, and the character of its ports. A yacht charter here places you at an immediate advantage: you arrive where roads do not reach, you stay longer in bays that day-trippers cannot access, and you leave on your own terms. The island suits both flotilla sailing and private crewed charters, though the latter unlocks a level of discretion that Paxos seems almost designed for. Gaios, the island's small but perfectly formed capital, offers safe mooring in its natural harbour — enclosed by the islet of Agios Nikolaos — and a waterfront of Venetian-era buildings, good tavernas, and an atmosphere that rewards an evening ashore.
Anchorages & Highlights
The western coastline of Paxos is the charter skipper's prize. The sea caves of Hypapanti, Ortholithos, and the great arch of Tripitos rank among the most dramatic coastal formations in the Ionian, best explored by tender or by swimming directly from the yacht. Mongonisi Bay at the island's southern tip offers sheltered anchorage with a sandy beach and easy holding. On the eastern coast, Lakka — a near-circular bay in the north — is arguably the most beautiful natural harbour in all of Paxos: calm, pine-fringed, and sociable without being overcrowded. Loggos, the third and smallest of Paxos's ports, sits midway along the east coast and rewards those who linger with exceptional local tavernas and a genuinely local atmosphere largely untouched by charter tourism. Anti-Paxos, the smaller sister island just two nautical miles to the south, demands a visit: Voutoumi and Vrika beaches offer Caribbean-grade water clarity in a thoroughly Greek setting.
Best Time to Charter in Paxos
The Ionian sailing season runs from late April through to October, with July and August bringing the most consistent conditions and the highest charter demand. The Maistros — the prevailing north-westerly breeze of the Ionian — provides reliable afternoon sailing wind throughout the summer months, making passages between Paxos, Corfu, Lefkada, and the mainland coast both comfortable and predictable. For those who prefer quieter anchorages and cooler temperatures, June and September represent the optimal balance: the sea is warm, the ports are approachable, and the island has room to breathe.
Getting There
Paxos has no airport, which is precisely part of its appeal. The island is most commonly reached by sailing south from Corfu (approximately 10 nautical miles) or north from Lefkada — both natural start points for an Ionian charter itinerary. Aris Drivas Yachting, operating from Athens since 1972, has built long-standing relationships with the Ionian's ports and marinas and can structure a bespoke itinerary that positions Paxos as either a destination in its own right or as part of a wider Ionian passage. If you are ready to plan your charter, we encourage you to contact our team directly — we will match you with the right vessel and build an itinerary around the islands and anchorages that suit you best.

June through September offers the most rewarding conditions for a Paxos yacht charter, with the Maistros north-westerly breeze delivering consistent afternoon sailing wind and sea temperatures reaching 25–27°C by mid-summer. July and August bring the liveliest atmosphere in Gaios and Lakka, though popular anchorages fill quickly and early arrival is advisable. For a more secluded experience with equally fine weather, June and September are the preferred months — lighter charter traffic, calmer mornings, and an island that feels closer to its unhurried, natural character.
