Planning your charter

What a crewed charter includes

A crewed charter is the whole operation, not just the yacht. The base rate covers the vessel, her full crew — captain, chef, and deckhands — insurance, water toys, and linen. Everything else runs through the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance): fuel, food and drink, berthing, and port fees, settled from a cash advance the captain manages and accounts for at the end of the week.

The captain plans the route around your dates, the weather, and what you want from the week. The chef provisions to a preference sheet you complete before embarkation. You board to a yacht that is fuelled, stocked, and briefed.

Charters run on the standard MYBA (Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association) agreement, so the commercial terms are set out in writing before you commit. We broker the yacht, hold the contract, and stay reachable throughout the charter.

How charter pricing works

Charter pricing has three parts: the base rate, VAT, and the APA.

  • Base rate — the weekly fee for the yacht and crew. It moves with size, age, builder, and season; a well-equipped 30-metre yacht can sit above a plainer 40-metre.
  • VAT — charged on the base rate at the rate of the country where the charter runs. It is stated in the contract, never a surprise.
  • APA — a cash advance, typically 35–45% of the base rate, that funds the running costs. The captain keeps a running tally and accounts for it at the end; the unspent balance is refunded, any shortfall topped up.

Crew gratuity sits outside all three — 10–15% of the base rate, given to the captain at the end of the week. We set out the full figure before you sign, so the cost of the week is clear from the start.

When to charter in Greece

The Greek charter season runs from late April to October. The Cyclades get the Meltemi, a northerly that can reach Force 5–6 in July and August and rewards an experienced crew; the Ionian gets the gentler Maestro, a northwesterly afternoon thermal that suits a more relaxed week.

June and September are the balance most guests prefer across both — warm water, lighter winds, and anchorages short of their peak-season crowds. May and early October are the quiet shoulders, with water still warm enough to swim.

Tell us the dates and the kind of week you want, and we will point you to the cruising ground and the yacht that fit. Browse the Cyclades and Ionian guides for the detail on each.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a yacht charter cost?+

Rates vary depending on size, age, builder, and season. A well-equipped 30m yacht can cost more than a basic 40m. Contact us for specific pricing.

What is included in the charter rate?+

The yacht, full crew, insurance, onboard amenities and water toys, bed linen, and towels. Fuel, food, beverages, berthing, and shore excursions are covered by the APA.

What is APA in a yacht charter?+

APA — the Advance Provisioning Allowance — is a cash advance paid to the yacht before embarkation under the MYBA charter contract, typically 35–45% of the base charter fee and usually settled with the final balance around 30 days before departure. The captain manages it on your behalf to cover running expenses: fuel, food and beverages, berthing and port fees, communications, laundry, and shore excursions. You receive a running tally during the charter and a full accounting at disembarkation — unspent balance is refunded, any shortfall topped up. APA is yacht-specific and itinerary-dependent; a longer cruising range or larger guest count raises the expected spend. Crew gratuity is separate from APA (10–15% of the base fee, given directly to the captain).

How far in advance should I secure a charter?+

Peak season Greece (July–August): 6–12 months ahead. Shoulder season: 2–4 months. Late availability does come up — ask and we will check current openings.

How much should I tip the crew?+

10–15% of base charter fee. Americans commonly tip up to 20%. Given to captain who distributes.
