Koufonisia

Where the Cyclades reveal their quietest, purest self

Charter in Koufonisia: What to Expect

A yacht charter to Koufonisia is, above all, an exercise in considered simplicity. The islands — Ano Koufonisi (inhabited) and Kato Koufonisi (largely deserted) — sit at the south-eastern edge of the Cyclades, forming part of the Small Cyclades alongside Iraklia, Schinoussa, and Donoussa. What they lack in grandeur they compensate for in intimacy: small-boat harbours, fish tavernas built directly over the water, and a shoreline sculpted into a succession of natural pools by millennia of Aegean wind and wave. Arriving on a private yacht means bypassing the ferry schedule entirely and positioning yourself exactly where the light falls best — at anchor, on your own terms.

Anchorages & Highlights

The main port of Ano Koufonisi offers stern-to berthing for visiting yachts and acts as your base for provisioning and evening dining along the quayside. For swimming, head south-east to the celebrated beach of Pori, accessible by a short sail around the island's eastern flank and offering crystalline shallows over white sand — an anchorage that rewards those who arrive early in the day. Fanos Beach, reached by yacht from the north-east, combines golden sand with a dramatic rock arch and is among the finest anchorage stops in the Small Cyclades. Kato Koufonisi, a short passage south, provides a near-uninhabited anchorage in Nero Bay — a protected inlet ideal for overnight stays in settled conditions — and access to the wild, wave-carved rock pools at Italida, which are best experienced from a tender. The passage between the two islands, known locally as the Steno, offers a sheltered afternoon anchorage used by experienced skippers who know how to read its gentle tidal shifts.

Best Time to Charter in Koufonisia

June and September represent the optimum months for a Koufonisia yacht charter. Meltemi winds — the prevailing north-northwesterlies of the Aegean summer — are manageable rather than punishing at this latitude in early and late season, allowing comfortable sailing between the Small Cyclades and reliable overnight anchoring. July and August bring stronger winds and significantly more charter traffic into the main port; experienced crews relish the sailing conditions, but berths require earlier planning. Spring arrivals in May find the island almost entirely private, with wildflowers on the hillsides and tavernas just reopening for the season.

Getting There

Koufonisia is most naturally approached as part of a Small Cyclades circuit departing from Naxos or Paros — both well-served by road and air — making it well-suited to a seven- or ten-day charter itinerary through the southern Cyclades. Aris Drivas Yachting has been designing bespoke Aegean itineraries since 1972 and holds particular expertise in routing clients through the less-frequented island groups where sailing conditions, local knowledge, and timing are what separate a good charter from an exceptional one. Whether you are considering a bareboat passage or a crewed charter with a full itinerary planned from Athens, the ADY team is available to advise on the right vessel, the right season, and the right sequence of anchorages. We invite you to submit a charter enquiry and allow our team to build your Koufonisia itinerary from the waterline up.

Best Season

June and September offer the most balanced conditions for a Koufonisia yacht charter, with moderate Meltemi winds, warm water temperatures, and significantly lower vessel traffic in the anchorages. July and August deliver stronger sailing breezes — typically Force 4–5 from the north-northwest — and are best suited to experienced crews comfortable with open-Aegean passages. May brings the island at its most private, with calm seas and spring light, though some shoreside facilities are still coming online for the season.
