Charter in Koufonisia: What to Expect

A Koufonisia charter is an exercise in simplicity. The islands — Ano Koufonisi (inhabited) and Kato Koufonisi (largely deserted) — sit at the southeastern edge of the Cyclades, part of the Small Cyclades alongside Iraklia, Schinoussa, and Donoussa. What they lack in scale they hold in intimacy: small-boat harbours, fish tavernas built over the water, and a shoreline cut into a run of natural pools by Aegean wind and wave. Arriving by yacht bypasses the ferry schedule and positions you where the light falls best — at anchor, on your own terms.

Anchorages & Highlights

The main port of Ano Koufonisi has stern-to berthing for visiting yachts and serves as the base for provisioning and evening dining along the quay. For swimming, head southeast to Pori, a short sail around the eastern flank, with clear shallows over white sand — an anchorage best reached early in the day. Fanos Beach, reached from the northeast, combines golden sand with a rock arch and is among the better anchorage stops in the Small Cyclades. Kato Koufonisi, a short passage south, has a near-uninhabited anchorage in Nero Bay — a protected inlet for overnight stays in settled conditions — and access to the wave-carved rock pools at Italida, best reached by tender. The passage between the two islands, known locally as the Steno, is a sheltered afternoon anchorage for skippers who know how to read its tidal shifts.

Best Time to Charter in Koufonisia

June and September are the best months for a Koufonisia charter. The Meltemi — the prevailing north-northwesterlies of an Aegean summer — is manageable at this latitude in early and late season, allowing comfortable sailing between the Small Cyclades and reliable overnight anchoring. July and August bring stronger winds and much more charter traffic into the main port; experienced crews enjoy the conditions, but berths need earlier planning. May arrivals find the island almost entirely private, wildflowers on the hillsides, tavernas just reopening for the season.

Getting There

Koufonisia is best approached as part of a Small Cyclades circuit departing from Naxos or Paros — both well served by road and air — which suits a seven- or ten-day itinerary through the southern Cyclades. Aris Drivas Yachting has designed Aegean itineraries since 1972 and routes clients through the less-frequented island groups, where conditions, local knowledge, and timing make the difference. Whether a bareboat passage or a crewed charter planned from Athens, the team can advise on the vessel, the season, and the sequence of anchorages. Best Season

June and September offer the most balanced conditions for a Koufonisia yacht charter, with moderate Meltemi winds, warm water temperatures, and significantly lower vessel traffic in the anchorages. July and August deliver stronger sailing breezes — typically Force 4–5 from the north-northwest — and are best suited to experienced crews comfortable with open-Aegean passages. May brings the island at its most private, with calm seas and spring light, though some shoreside facilities are still coming online for the season.

Why Charter Here

Koufonisia (officially Koufonisi) is the smallest inhabited island of the Small Cyclades, a mini-archipelago southeast of Naxos. Despite being barely 3.5 km long, it has become one of the most talked-about destinations in the Aegean — and for good reason.

The island's south coast is a continuous ribbon of golden sand and sculpted rock, punctuated by sea caves and natural pools. Pori beach dissolves into a shallow turquoise lagoon that rivals any Caribbean cove. The village is a cluster of low-rise houses, a few tavernas, and a working fishing harbour where lobster comes straight off the boat.

Upper Koufonisi is uninhabited and even more pristine — a short tender ride reveals hidden sandy beaches with not a building in sight. By yacht, Koufonisia is the ultimate contrast to the busier Cycladic islands: all the beauty, none of the infrastructure. Combine with Amorgos and Naxos for a Small Cyclades itinerary that feels genuinely off the beaten path.
