Charter in Capri: What to Expect
Capri's yacht charter pattern is distinct from the rest of the Campanian coast. Most visiting yachts treat the island as a one-to-two-night stop on a broader Amalfi itinerary, but Capri rewards those who stay longer and explore it slowly from the water. The island's circumnavigation by yacht is a half-day passage of roughly 17 kilometres, and every cove, sea cave, and cliff face along the route is accessible only by boat. Day-trippers arrive by ferry to Marina Grande, take the funicular up to the piazzetta, and leave by evening — which means the island's best anchorages and restaurants are effectively private after 18:00 for anyone who stays aboard.
Berths at Marina Grande (Porto Turistico di Capri) are stern-to and must be booked weeks ahead in peak season; a 30-metre yacht pays approximately €1,200 per night in July and August. Many captains prefer to anchor off Marina Piccola on the south coast and tender ashore, avoiding the congestion entirely.
Anchorages & Highlights
Marina Piccola is Capri's finest yacht anchorage — sheltered by the Solaro cliffs, good holding in sand, and direct views of the Faraglioni. The beach clubs here — La Canzone del Mare, Torre Saracena, and Da Gioia — are all accessible by swim or tender from anchor. It is a different world from the ferry terminal on the north side.
The Faraglioni rock stacks, off the south-eastern tip, offer an iconic anchorage and the chance to pass through the natural arch in the middle stack by tender — an experience that only exists by sea. The Blue Grotto on the north-west coast is Capri's most famous attraction: yachts anchor or pick up a buoy outside the cave entrance, and guests transfer to official government rowboats for entry (private tenders cannot enter the grotto). The cave is open 09:00–17:00, weather permitting; the best light falls between noon and 14:00. Beyond the Blue Grotto, the island's lesser-known sea caves — the Grotta Verde, Grotta Bianca, and Grotta Rossa — are reachable only by tender and rarely visited.
Best Time to Charter in Capri
The season runs from April through October. Late May to June and September to early October offer the ideal balance: sea temperatures of 22–25°C, steady 8–15 knot breezes, manageable crowds, and full availability at the beach clubs and restaurants. July and August are the hottest and most congested months — berth availability at Marina Grande is tightest, and Capri municipality has introduced new 2026 regulations capping organised tour groups and tightening ferry scheduling to manage overtourism. For yacht guests, peak season is paradoxically the best time to be aboard: the island's land-side infrastructure is overwhelmed, making a private yacht the most comfortable — and most exclusive — way to experience Capri.
Getting There
Naples International Airport (NAP) is 30 minutes by road from the Molo Beverello ferry terminal. Hydrofoils to Capri run every 30–60 minutes in season (50 minutes from Naples, 20 minutes from Sorrento). Helicopter transfer from Naples Capodichino to Anacapri's heliport takes 15 minutes and is a practical option for guests joining a yacht already at anchor. Winds are lightest in July and August; the steadiest sailing conditions are in May, June, and September when 8–15 knot breezes provide comfortable passages between Capri, Ischia, and the Amalfi Coast.
